Copywriter turned author…or author turned copywriter? Either way, he’s doing a pretty damn good job of balancing the art and the commerce side of creative writing.

Armed with a liberal arts degree from Wayne State University and a serious knack for creative writing, Michael jumped into copywriting at an ad agency, while also writing and publishing small pieces in his spare time.

In 2000, Michael had his first book published, Second Hand — a novel about a Detroit junk-store owner — which Publishers Weekly called “Incisively humorous and surprisingly poignant.”

Michael’s second novel, The Leisure Seeker, was no sophomore slump — quite the opposite. Published in 2009, the novel put Michael on the map, at home and internationally. The Leisure Seeker caught fire in Italy, and soon, Michael was on a book tour traveling to cities in Tuscany and Sicily – he even made a cameo in Italy’s Vanity Fair.

Rooted in Detroit and working part time at CE, he continues to write, devoting his mornings to exploring plot paths, character nuances and other creative concepts stirring in his mind.

Although seemingly glamorous, there is a balance to it all. “Sometimes there’s an element where you’re sitting around not knowing if things will work out,” says Michael. “You just have to keep writing and hope all the ideas and stories and musings will come to fruition.”

So when’s the next book coming out? It’s in the process of being fleshed out; Michael wouldn’t tell us what it’s about. He didn’t want to jinx anything, but we’re confident his work is un-jinx-able.
